Little Black Dresses (LBDs for Christmas Party

Everyone loves a LBD (Little Black Dress). It's the always classic, always reliable dress that you can pull out for those festive occasions, e.g. the office Christmas party. These days, the LBD comes in a variety of styles, shapes and silhouettes. The best thing about them is that they are like a blank canvas for you to dress up or down as required. Simply add some bling for a glammed-up look, or throw on a pair of ballet flats for those casual events. Cheap Party Dresses for Christmas : Back to Black (strapless prom dresses)

Earlier in the Cheap Party dresses rundown, I featured a whole gallery of strapless black numbers. But you can never have too many LBDs in my opinion, so here are two more that definitely make the grade (especially now their prices have been slashed in the sale). They're both from New Look, and start at £20 for the velvet spot dress (very Luella) with the frilly, ruffled prom dress coming in at £35, which is a great deal considering all the detail. Move fast as sizes are already limited. That's what happens with bargains like this!

Black lace mini dresses

British fashion plates, Thandie Newton and Peaches Geldof, have been spotted on both sides of the pond in recent days wearing black lace. Firstly, Newton was snapped at the New York première of Run, Fat Boy, Run in this mini dress from Temperley London's spring '08 collection. Then at Wednesday's première of Shine A Light in London, Peaches Geldof followed it up with a another thigh-skimming lacy number. Fancy trying out this Gothic style for less? Then ASOS.com have a black dress with lace overlay for just £38. Add a waist belt, for a touch of Thandie style!

Brighton Museum's Little Black Dress exhibition

Brighton Museum launched their 'Little Black Dress' exhibition recently showcasing a stunning display of designer LBDs alongside dresses from Brighton residents which runs until 1st June 2008.

Eleanor Thompson, Curator of Costume, said “We are always embarking on something new and innovative at Brighton Museum. This project will take a fresh look at something most women hold very dear, and help us see our wardrobes in a different light. This may prove an inspirational exhibition at a time when dressing up for an evening out is fast becoming fashionable again.”

The exhibition is being curated by leading fashion designer Andrew Fionda (of the label Pearce II Fionda) and will chart the history of this iconic garment. Some of the designer gowns featured in the exhibition include Aquascutum, Barbara Hulanicki (Biba), Ben de Lisi, Betty Jackson, DAKS, English Eccentrics, Giles Deacon, Hamish Morrow, Jaeger, Jean Muir, John Galliano, Julien MacDonald, and Marios Schwab.
It looks like a must for any style mavens on the south coast, and what's more it's free entry! See below for some images of the exhibition.

Little Black Dress at Oasis online

Anybody who knows anything about fashion knows that a little black dress (LBD), first created by Coco Chanel in the 1920s, is a wardrobe staple. Every season designers feature the classic item in their collections in slight variations. Now UK high street retailer Oasis has created a range of four LBDs from just £70 to see you through the upcoming party season.

The great thing about a black dress (particularly a simple design like this) is that it is timeless and always worth the investment. It's such a basic item that it can be a back up for any night out.
